This week the federal government launched Foundry School, a national training program aimed at preparing entrepreneurs, engineers, technicians, and industrial leaders for a rebuild of U.S. manufacturing. It runs as a workforce partnership anchored by Stanford University, which developed the core advanced manufacturing curriculum, with keystone lectures from Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Penn State, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Kansas, and Vanderbilt. Across those eight campuses the program will run 17 sessions taught by founders and CEOs from advanced manufacturing companies.
Foundry School is not aimed at entry-level workers. Its audience is founders, engineers, and industrial leadership. But the reason it exists is the part that matters if you are thinking about your own next move.
The investment capital is already flowing into American manufacturing. The trained people to staff it are not there. That is the entire premise of the program, and it is a premise worth taking seriously regardless of what you think about the politics behind it.
Most career advice tells you to "follow your passion" or "find what you're good at." Useful, but incomplete. The third variable is where demand outruns supply, because that is where leverage lives.
A projected shortfall of roughly 1.9 million unfilled positions is an unusually loud version of that signal. When employers cannot fill roles, three things tend to follow:
That third point is the one career changers routinely underestimate. In a tight-supply field, the cost of retraining shifts away from you and onto the employer.
This is the single biggest misconception standing between career changers and this opportunity.
The roles driving the shortage are highly technical and specialized: robotics, artificial intelligence systems, and additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing. The modern advanced manufacturing floor looks closer to a lab than to an assembly line. Diagnostics, programming, quality systems, and automation troubleshooting are the daily work.

The gap between where you are and where these roles sit is often a credential and six to eighteen months, not a four-year degree. If you are not sure which of your competencies are actually portable, a transferable-skills audit is the place to start.

It is a weaker fit if you need fully remote work, want a fast path into people-leadership without technical depth, or dislike shift-based schedules. Plenty of these roles are day shift, but plenty are not.
Career changes fail most often when people commit before they validate. A reasonable sequence:
A projected 3.8 million openings with about half at risk of going unfilled is not a guarantee of a job. It is a probability shift. It means the field is likely to be more forgiving to career changers over the next several years than fields where qualified applicants outnumber openings ten to one.
